Protruding ears

Otoplasty is the term used to describe the operation performed to reshape protruding ears. This defect is most often the result of a plication defect in the cartilage of the ear auricle. This surgery can be performed at any age from about 7 years of age.

Indications

  • Excessive angle between the ear auricle and skull.
  • Excessive size of certain cartilage parts, responsible for the protruding appearance of the ear.
  • Cartilage fold defect which gives the ear a flat and unstuck appearance.

The surgical intervention

  • The scars are hidden in the fold behind the ear.
  • The cartilage is exposed by peeling off the skin and is reshaped to restick the auricle back to the ear.

In order to be fully satisfied, a period of 1 to 3 months is necessary for the tissues to regain their suppleness and for the scars to fade. The ear reliefs are then visible and the sensitivity of the ear is recovered within the following months.

Quitting smoking at least 2 months before the operation is mandatory in order to prevent predictable complications. Your surgeon will also review your general health with you in detail in order to minimise the risks of the surgical intervention as much as possible.
